COOKHAM DEAN WIN JULIAN CUP PLATE FINAL
02 Jul 2009
On a warm, sunny evening at Pinkneys Green, Cookham Dean comfortably defeated 'The Twighlighters' by 52 runs in the final of the Julian Cup plate.
Having won the toss and electing to bat, Cookham got off to a great start with skipper Tom Bibby hitting the ball to all parts of the ground in a fine innings of 58. The score was well placed on 87-2 after 9 overs, but when Bibby departed there was a middle order collapse so after 13 overs the score was on 105-6. Then there was a key partnership of 62 by Mike Maroudas (43) and Rory Millar (17). Both of these batsmen got out in the penultimate over and with a late flurry of wickets, Cookham were bowled out off the last ball for 186. Twighlighter spinners Hussian (4-39) and Kumar (3-34) were the most successful bowlers.
In reply, The Twilighters needed to get off to a good start and they did as Adil (33) and Asghar (14) took them to 38-0 off 4 overs. However, Nick Borland (3-24) then dismissed the top 3 batsmen in the space of 3 overs, which also hepled reduce the run rate. Change bowlers Christian Austin (2-27) and Rory Millar (2-31) both bowled economically and took wickets at regular intervals, which essentially ended The Twighlighters hopes of victory. At the end of their 20 overs, they finished up on 134-7, giving Cookham Dean a thoroughly deserved 52 run victory.
With there being many candidates for Man of the Match, it was a tough decision to be made, but it was given to Mike Maroudas for his hard hitting innings of 43, which consisted of 5 fours and 2 sixes.
