Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 30 runs

Match report A good start to the 2023 campaign with a solid win at Marlow by 30 runs to the accompaniment of Fleetwood Bac performing at Pub in the Park next door.

It was a good batting track and a slow outfield, making wickets and boundaries hard to come by. Johnny won the toss and decided to bat. Sam and Guy got us off to a great start with some aggressive running, putting on 49 runs before Sam was finally run out trying to take another cheeky single. That brought Johnny to the crease, who used his power to find the boundary 6 times in total. Johnny and Guy retired in quick succession at which point we were 107-1 from 14 overs. Rowan, Joel and Kairav (the latter two playing in their first U15 match) then moved the scoreboard along briskly taking us to a final 156-2 off 20 overs. Joel showed good technique to find the gaps in the field and Kairav timed the ball beautifully to score three boundaries.

Marlow's reply got off to a bad start when Rowan bowled van Eeden with a full toss first ball and both Rowan and Jake bowled nicely to keep runs tight at the start. Jake was unlucky to only pick up one wicket from a skilful display of swing bowling that had the batters in a lot of trouble. Drever and Coombs put up some solid resistance and wickets proved elusive, but Marlow were always behind the run rate and finished up on 126-4. The bowlers kept it generally tight and Jon would have been proud of the fielding display. Giving away 41 wides, which would have been more without some athletic keeping by Guy, was an expensive luxury that we need to tighten up on, but overall this was a strong performance and a good way to start the year.
