Wraysbury v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 28 Aug 2022 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
The Sunday 1st XI achieved a comprehensive and much needed win at scenic Wraysbury on Sunday as they overcome a slump of three successive defeats that has resulted in the inevitable calls for often-absent skipper Isaac Richardson to be put out to pasture.
Stand-in skipper Gregory Davis failed in his first task of the day, losing the toss and condemning the Dean to an afternoon baking in the sun as Wraysbury inevitably elected to bat. Cookham opened the bowling with Fraser Finlan and DJ Singh who both bowled pretty well on a flat deck and were rewarded when Finlan had Mansoor held at cover by the skipper early on. Owen and Prabhjot batted well and set the platform for Wraysbury as Libby Burton and young leggie Finn Robinson bowled tidily once they settled, although they weren’t helped by a deluge of shelled catches as Wraysbury went past the hundred. We’ll avoid naming names but suffice to say Luke Cairns will have gone without dinner on Sunday evening as a clearly underwhelmed Caitlin looked on in disgust at the efforts of her progeny. The introduction of indulged youngster Lashvein Sirsankar bought the breakthrough as Owen chipped a return catch to the diminutive youth to fall for a well-made 42. The middle order continued to play aggressively but Lashvein bowled well and kept his cool to chip away, having Prabhjot held by Greg at long on for an aggressive 79 and seeing Rajan (32) off in the same manner to finish with 3-56 from his allocation of eight overs. The third young spinner Aariz Marchant (2-42) plugged away to pick up a couple of wickets and Fraser (keeping his eye on the task in hand instead of nearby females) returned to pick up a well-deserved second wicket to finish with the impressive figures of 2-24 from his full allocation. Wraysbury closed on a competitive 229-7 from their 40 overs but would have felt that they left some runs on the park given the flat deck and rapid outfield.
After both teams enjoyed the usual excellent Wraysbury spread, the fielding side reluctantly made their way out into to the middle for the second innings. Cookham opened with returning old boys Jonny Gay and Simon D’Ardenne who exploited the opposition’s lethargy as they came flying out of the blocks, plundering boundaries to all parts. Medium pacers Andy Charles and Iffy Wain entered the attack, bringing a semblance of control before Gay, who had been the primary aggressor, picked out extra cover off Charles for a crunching 48 with the score at 98 in the 17th over. This bought DJ Singh to the crease and Cookham progressed to drinks without further alarm well-placed at 114-1 at the halfway point. After drinks the run rate really picked up with Simon going on the offensive against the spinners and DJ playing a sensible supporting role, picking up the 1s and 2s and running hard. The hosts seemingly had no answer to this onslaught as Simon progressed quickly to his hundred which he bought up in the 32nd over before being encouraged to retire for an uncharacteristically enterprising 104. The skipper joined DJ and quickly dispatched a couple of enormous biguns to see the Dean to a comprehensive victory; DJ finishing unbeaten on 35 and the Dean on 233-1 in the 35th over. Speaking after the game, Simon observed “it was great to open with my old partner in crime Jonny, and to respond in the best way possible to disparaging remarks made by James Taylor about my batting approach and motives during the Chertsey game. I’d also like to think the Hounslow-based eatery whose mixed grill put usual opener Jake Richardson out of action for the weekend and gave me this opportunity.”
