Chertsey v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 14 Aug 2022 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
A competitive and entertaining match was played in great spirits against Chertsey on Sunday.
The Dean arrived to be greeted by a threadbare looking pitch and temperatures nudging 35 degrees. Stand in Skipper Rob Mettler duly won the toss and after predictably electing to bat decied to instigate the old tradition of the "line up lottery"
Returning Old boy Jonny Gay and James Le Fleming strode out to the crease,"Jalf" was castled after 3 balls, followed quickly by Taylor who according to him was dismissed by the "Jaspreet Bumrah like" bowling of youngster Barnes but according to the rest of the team is simply crap at batting. This brought seasoned Sunday bully Jake Richardson to the crease and the pair scored freely, putting on a century partnership before Jake gloved one to the keeper from the wily off spin of Cooperfor 45. The second returning old boy Simon D'Ardenne then set about his usual gritty, turgid "modus operandi" of nudging singles all over the place and protecting his wicket like a Honey Badger guarding her cubs. Chertsey rotated the bowlers and with Simon and Jonny looking ever more comfortable, the excited Cookham team looked on with growing anticipation of a debut century for Jonny until he was bowled by the dangerous "Eric ", 8 agonizing runs short of the magic three figures. A quick cameo from Mettler included one enormous six that meant that the Dean finished up on 218-4.
Like the homecoming of an old friend, Cookham settled down to enjoy the comforting delight of an actual cricket tea prepared by the good ladies of Chertsey. D'Ardenne was positively crowing about his 43 not out, congratulating himself on a well executed game plan to ensure red ink and justifying his tactics by saying "it was all to help Jonny get to his ton"...................the jury is most definitely out on this.
In reply the Cookham bowling got off to a disastrous start with Sashank and Bobby ( possibly the smallest person I have seen on a cricket pitch) leading the attack. The belligerent Westcott was in his element crashing the young lads all over the park and Chertsey were 50 for 0 after the first 5 overs. Sashank to his credit got his lengths sorted and bowled Westcott to have the last laugh for 41. Mettler decied that slowing the pace down was the best ploy and Adhrit (1-31) and Luke (1-39) bowled really well but despite this Chertsey made steady progress with Patel roaring along including one over where he smashed Lashvein for 3 consecutive sixes. Mettler then turned to "wily old coffin dodger" Taylor, who had Patel caught on the boundary for 81, Sashank took the wicket of Thailwal but youngsters Barnes and Ozer steered the home side to victory despite a flurry of chances, the worst of which was a comical dolly drop from Simon D'Ardenne ( no doubt still thinkinga bout his red ink) who let a skier from Barnes slip through his hands and smash him in the "unmentionables" amid a flurry of curses from agrieved bowler Taylor.
We all had beer after the game and enjoyed the really social atmosphere of Chertsey. This was followed by a post match de-briefing at Nandos where the old boys concluded that Teas must be re-introduced for Sunday games at Cookham.
