Odney v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 03 Jul 2022 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
Having won their last 2 completed fixtures, Cookham Sunday Friendly XI arrived in high spirits on a pleasant early July afternoon, but suffered a humbling defeat at local rivals’ Odney.
On a green track, captain Isaac Richardson lost the toss (again) and Cookham were put into bat. Odney opened the bowling with Moss, a slow dibbly-dobbler type bowler, who is so often the nemesis of Cookham’s gung-ho Sunday batting line up, and so it proved once again. Brooks fell first, chipping to mid-off. After a flurry of boundaries, Jake Richardson went in almost identical fashion, whilst trying to clear the quickly set back field. Isaac Richardson was next to fall to Moss’ charms, hammering a cut shot straight to cover. All the while, regular Sunday bully boy Rob Mettler was making short work of the Odney attack and quickly progressing towards a fast 50.
Cookham’s middle order was made up of the young and the decrepit, but they all fell to similar fates, with Robinson (4), Hughes (3) and Taylor (6) all departing cheaply, with Cookham reaching 139 for 6 in the 24th over, with Mettler accounting for about 80% of the runs. Mettler reached a brilliant hundred, which went against the vein of the rest of his teammates, before falling for 109 with the score on 157 for 7. Returning fans favourite, Peter Manchester, today doing his best impression of environmental activist, ‘Swampy’, hit a cameo 25 not out whilst wearing brightly coloured mismatched shoes. He respectfully asked that Swampy didn’t stick as a nickname. After Barney Davis departed for 6 and Gerry Spencer fell for a duck, Swampy ran youngster debutant William Whall out for a 2, to leave Cookham all out for 188 in the 35th over.
In response Swampy took the new ball, alongside James Taylor, who was wearing a stolen tight fitting u15 Berkshire cricket top which reared up over his belly after each delivery. However unfortunately the opening bowlers made no inroads, despite a dropped catch, as Baillie and Wilkinson soon took control for Odney, reaching 59 for 0 off 10 overs. Mysterious International tennis pro, (at least that’s what his blazer implied) Gerry Spencer, entered the attack as first change, and decided to run in and bowl his medium pace whilst wearing a wide brim sunhat, an unusual site. This distraction technique didn’t pay off as his 3 overs were dispatched for 32. From the other end Barney ‘Dyno’ Davis bowled accurate medium pace, without reward.
As Odney raced to 137 for 0 at the halfway stage, the Cookham fielders’ attention soon seemed to slip away from the match and towards finding fun nicknames to give their new young teammates. James Taylor decided to confidently just call anyone under the age of 20, ‘Barney’ but after being called out on this multiple times, he switched to simply ‘child 1 – 4’. After drinks, Ryan ‘Cyclopes’ Hughes, so called due something flying into his eye mid run up, after which time he had to bowl with one eye shut, bowled in tandem with Finn ‘Sharky’ Robinson (you can work that one out). Both bowled well in difficult circumstances, with the game already well beyond Cookham. The standout bowler however was William Whall, who managed to pick up 2 late wickets in his 2 overs to add a hint of respectability to the crushing defeat. The game was wrapped up within 30 overs with Wilkinson finishing 75 not out. Cookham have now not beaten Odney since 2017, a sad reflection of the rot suffered under the Richardson captaincy regime.
Cookham are in search of an opponent for next week’s match, but will be without wantaway captain Isaac Richardson, as they go in search of a bounce back win.
