Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Harrow Wayfarers on Sun 12 Jun 2022 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 6 Wickets

Match report Cookham Dean Friendly XI returned to action at Rickett’s Field on Sunday with a thrilling high scoring victory over the enthusiastic Harrow Wayfarers.

Captain Richardson lost the toss on what look from the outset to be a flat belter of a track, and Cookham were sent into the field, much to the annoyance of most of his team. Making his Sunday debut, the impressive Sashank Sahasranamamula took the new ball and immediately looked to make inroads into the top order, clean bowling Simmons with middle stump out of the ground for 3.

However, Sashank should have had at least two more wickets if it was not for the wayward slip fielding of Harry Styles wannabe, James Le Fleming, shelling two catches at first slip. These dropped chances very much set the tone for the rest of the day in the field. Davinder Kumar opened the bowling from the other end and the opening pair kept the scoring rate below 3 an over for the opening 10 overs.

Change bowlers Le Fleming and Ralphs kept the pressure on, and both took a wicket each, with captain Richardson making his only contribution of the season so far by taking a chance at mid-on. The visitors were around 50 for 3 after 15 overs. However, the innings soon changed course with 3 notable chances going begging, Le Fleming shelled a caught and bowled opportunity, Sashank dropped a catch at point and injured his hand in the process, ruling him out of the rest of the match, and Richardson embarrassed himself by losing a high ball in the sun and cowering in fear from being hit on the head (much to the oppositions’ amusement). Following these mishaps Sloan (100) and Buckfield (93) went through the gears and upped the scoring rate, with more chances coming and going for Cookham.

Cookham’s prodigal son, Simon D’Ardenne, returned to the side after James Taylor left an opening for a horrid character following his late withdrawal, and was soon dispatched to all parts, with his one over going for 17 runs. Youngsters Kashish Choundary and Lashvein Srisankar both bowled better than their figures suggested in difficult circumstances. Finally, Andy Finlan broke the partnership, clean bowling Buckfield for 93, but by then most of the damage was done.

Capitalising on a decent batsman getting out Richardson immediately entered the attack for the first time this season and bowled 2 wayward overs, although he could have had an undeserved wicket if it were not for yet another dropped catch. Davinder Kumar returned to bowl picking up 2 late wickets, and Kashish Choudary finished with a tidy couple of overs. After 3 hours in the field and many-a-search for a lost ball, Harrow Wayfarers finished on 276 for 6 from their 40 overs. Estimates for the number of dropped catches range from 8 to 12 but suffice to say it was one of the worst fielding displays from a Cookham team in recent memory.

In response, Dave Brooks and Rob Mettler got Cookham off to a fast start reaching 40 within 6 overs before Mettler fell for 14. Brooks lasted a little longer before being dismissed for a well-made 30 in the 15th over with the score on 87. JALF, still apparently fuming from his only Cookham Dean hundred not getting a match report write up and missing out on the player of the week award, looked to dismantle the Harrow Wayfarers attack, bludgeoning 4s and 6s to all parts. He was joined by Lashvein Srisanker, and the two put together a fast-paced partnership, bringing the score to 178 from 26 overs before Le Fleming was bowled by Buckfield with another hundred in sight.

Villain of the afternoon, Simon D’Ardenne came in next and kept the scoreboard moving to reach 220 in the 33rd over. However, he then ran out Srisanker for 33 with a bizarre mix up. With the fielding side appealing for an LBW D’Ardenne called a run but caught Lashvein off guard as he was watching the umpire for a decision. With both batsman stood at the non-strikers end D’Ardenne knowingly grounded his bat to ensure Lashvein would have to go. Whilst D’Ardenne continued to stodge about, the fluent Ben Ralphs took Cookham over the line in the 38th over with an aggressive 44 not out in no time at all.

Cookham have remarkably won all 3 of their matches under Richardson’s weak leadership this season. Cookham are away at the delightful Basingstoke and North Hants next weekend. With a village cup on the same day Richardson will be desperate for any and all available players!
