Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Downsiders on Sun 07 Aug 2022 at 12pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 33 runs

Match report Cookham Dean Friendly XI toiled in scorching heat as they succumbed to a 33 run defeat to the travelling side, Downsiders, captained by the brother of regular Cookham player, James Carter. On a day that screamed bat first, Richardson lost the toss and Cookham were sent into the field on the increasingly desolate looking Cookham outfield.

Finlan took the new ball and got Alden out caught and bowled in the first over. Carter and Cope soon began a counter attack, but Finlan along with fellow opening bowler Sashank kept things fairly quiet early on. Sashank was unfortunate to not take a wicket following a hopeless dropped catch by skipper Richardson. Frazer broke the partnership to dismiss Cope for 25 with the score on 40 in the 9th over. After the opening spell Downsiders soon looked to accelerate with Paddy Crowley taking some punishment in his opening over. John Caen, who appears to have grown about a foot since this reporter last saw him, bowled an impressive spell and picked up Carter for 28 with the score on 70 in the 15th over.

Phillips (61) and Carrick (39) then took the game away from the home side, as Cookham’s youthful middle over bowlers of Vikyath Vatnala, Adhrit Pande and Lashvein Srisankar all incurred some harsh punishment. Although Srisankar to his credit did break the partnership, with a well taken catch at midwicket by Pande, and he picked up a second wicket clean bowled to reduce Downsiders to 168 for 5 in the 25th over. Cookham really begun to wilt in the heat at this point, which was not epitomised more than when Richardson took a blow in the unmentionables but not one of his ailing teammates came to offer a word of support or comfort, despite their captain staying down for a couple of minutes. Frazer Finlan and John Caen were on regular ball fetching duty out of the horses field next door, but will need to improve their ball finding abilities in future!

Cookham turned to the more experienced hand of James Carter to look to slow the scoring in the final overs, along with the return of the opening bowlers, but Hawkin (40) and Lucy (39*) kept dispatching the ball around the ground. Despite being shortened to 35 overs a side, the end of the innings could not come soon enough with Downsiders reaching 256 for 6, Finlan picking up a late consolation wicket to finish with very credible figures of 3 for 23 from his 6 overs.

Cookham looked to regroup in the interval, and perhaps hoped the hangovers of their touring opponents would finally catch up with them. Openers Adhrit Pande and Rob Mettler looked to bring some intent to the chase, bringing up the 50 within 10 overs, before Mettler fell to Carrick for 37. James Carter, clearly with a point to prove after getting annoyed at a no ball call by his brother whilst he was bowling, looked to keep the attack going but he soon fell for 23 to Hobbs with the score on 88 in the 15th. Pande was next to go following a well made 25, as Cookham left themselves with a mountain to climb, needing around 150 in the final 15 overs.

Lashvein Srisankar and Isaac Richardson looked to put together a counter attacking partnership and benefitted from some of Downsiders second string bowlers getting a run out. Srisankar inparticular took one over from Alden for 22 to keep Cookham in the hunt. With 6 overs to go Cookham had reached 191, needing 66 from the final 6 overs, and still in with an outside chance. Richardson squandered his chance to be a hero as he was cleaned up by Phillips for 31. Srisankar kept attacking to his credit and finished on a brilliant 80 not out, with John Caen finishing on 11. Sadly Cookham fell 33 short of their unlikely victory target.

Whilst it was no doubt a difficult afternoon in the field, Cookham can be proud of their efforts, particularly when you consider 6 of the side were under 17s, all of whom impressed at different stages of the match. Downsiders were a friendly opponent, but no doubt there will be a few choice words in the Carter household in the days to come.
