Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Under-19s (Tony Austin Cup) on Sat 11 Sep 2021 at 12:30
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 9 runs
Match report
The second annual running of the Tony Austin Cup between the club's junior and senior sections was a magnificent match played in unseasonably sunny and warm conditions for mid-September.
The junior's captain JALF won the toss and - changing his mind at the last minute having noticed a nice green top on the strip - chose to bowl. This was looking a good decision in the 14th over when the seniors had been reduced to 61 for 5 by a hostile JALF opening spell accounting for Tyson, Taine and a dangerous-looking Greg and early successes for Matt Dempster getting James Carter to pop up a catch and the last-minute-ringer spinner Haider trapping Kulvinder leg before. Mike Cutting came into this crisis situation and decided the solution was to cut loose and up the scoring rate. He and captain Yas put on a rapid 57 runs to take them to the halfway break at a more respectable looking 118 for 5. JALF responded by bringing himself back on after the break and removed Mike first ball, but Yas was playing beautifully and could not be shifted. Aaron, Davinder and Brooksy gave him great support as he took charge of the second half of the innings, reaching a well-deserved century just before the end and setting an imposing target of 251 for the juniors to chase.
In reply, George Keylock came out all guns blazing, determined to make good use of the 8-over powerplay. Despite losing DJ (the youngest player at 13), caught of a ball that jumped off a length, George blitzed his way to a half century, timing the ball beautifully and bringing up his 50 (48 of which were in boundaries) with a trademark reverse sweep. By this point, however, Fozzy and Kulvinder were in the middle of tight spells of bowling and were making scoring increasingly hard. George was stumped trying the force the pace off Kulvinder. Matt Dilley, promoted in the order for his power hitting, then played an uncharacteristically watchful innings and at the halfway stage the youngsters had reached 92 for 2 - somewhat behind where the seniors were but with wickets in hand. After the break Will Dempster and Dilley upped the rate, but with the final two balls of his spell Kulvinder took the wickets of Dilley and Milligan and followed that up by running out young Alfie Agar as he tried to nick a cheeky second run to the old stager. The juniors were still feeling they had a chance though, despite 91 runs being needed from only 50 balls, as JALF came to the crease to join fellow first-teamer Dempster, who had hit top gear by now and was starting to hit some big sixes. JALF only lasted 2 overs though, caught on the boundary off a crafty long hop from the skipper. Dempster, supported ably by Haider, managed to keep up with the required rate for a few overs leaving the colts needing 20 runs from the final two overs. Then Greg landed the killer blow, getting Dempster caught on the boundary (for a superb 105) and bowling Haider in consecutive balls and the juniors ultimately ended up 9 runs short of their target.
So the seniors get to keep the Tony Austin Cup. Many thanks to all the many volunteers and helpers on the day, not least those who searched fruitlessly for the Cup itself only to discover later that it doesn't yet exist in physical form. Our very own holy grail.
