Cookham Dean Cricket Club Under 19 v Wokingham on Tue 17 Aug 2021 at 17:15
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report A gripping match that went down to the final ball. As Div 2 East Champions we hosted the Div 2 Central Runners Up Wokingham in the post-season play-offs. Both teams were unbeaten and sporting a hugely positive net run rate from their matches to date, so a closely-fought high quality contest was anticipated and very much delivered.

Cookham won the toss and decided to bat first. James Isbell played the anchor role to perfection as Taine, George K and Will D in turn applied the muscle at the other end. With Jalf replacing James when he was run out nearing his retirement, we posted a solid score of 135 for 3 from our 20 overs. The accuracy of the Wokingham attack, giving away only 5 runs in extras, had helped contain our scoring though, so we knew we'd have to bowl well and take wickets if we were to win, given that several of Wokingham's top order play in the Home Counties league.

Matt Dilley and Jalf got us off to a great start, keeping runs tight and taking wickets. After George K gunned down Khalid with a fantastic throw from the boundary Wokingham were rocking at 46 for 4 after 9 overs, but then captain Creighton joined Carty in the middle and started to build a partnership. Having put on 50 runs in 5 overs the captain turned to Dilley to bowl his final over and the gamble worked with Creighton nicking off to the keeper. Carty fell a couple of overs later in similar fashion off George Y and the pendulum seemed to have swung back our way. 21 runs needed from the last 3 overs but the top 6 were all out. Number 7 bat Barson though, proved to be a stronger batter than his position would indicate, and with one over left only 4 runs were needed. George Y took the ball and promptly bowled Carter, then after a scrambled single to Barker, induced Barson to hit the ball to Isbell who took a good catch in the poor light. 3 needed off 3 balls and two new batters at the crease, could the miracle be achieved. A dot, a drop and run single, and two runs were needed off the final ball. With a sizeable crowd roaring the teams on Barker proved equal to the task, clipping the ball to deep midwicket for the two runs needed to seal the win.

Well done to the boys for putting up a great fight and for an excellent season all round. We wish Wokingham all the best as they continue in the U19 play-offs.
