Great Kingshill v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 05 Sep 2021 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 143 runs

Match report Cookham Dean Friendly XI produced their 4th victory on the bounce, on an historic day, away at Great Kingshill on Sunday.

It was a baking hot day as Cookham Dean arrived at Great Kingshill, and after waiting 15 minutes for the colts game to finish, captain Isaac Richardson was relieved to win the toss and send the home team out to field, having seen the flat track and lightning fast outfield. Opening up for Cookham was the experienced pair of Dave Brooks (who ticked off another new ground on his odyssey to play at every club in the Home Counties) and seasoned flat track bully, Jake Richardson. Great Kingshill’s opening bowlers were of a good standard and Dashwood in particular bowled at a decent pace, with bouncers whistling past the batsmen’s ears on regular occasions.

However, the openers weathered the early storm and soon started cashing in once the change bowlers entered the fray. After a 99-run partnership, Brooks (36) was the first to fall in the 19th over. Cookham’s stand out Sunday batsman of the year Rob Mettler joined Richardson and the scoring rate quickly began to increase. By this time Richardson was nearing his century, and the fielders were becoming increasing tired of watching the ball fly to all parts!

Mettler (24) was out caught behind in the 27th over with the score on 152, bringing ‘the less reliable’ Richardson Jr to the crease. Jake Richardson soon bought up his century, and after initially refusing to retire, eventually was talked out by a combination of the home teams fielders and his captain brother at the other end, finally leaving the field for 118. With 6 overs to go the score was on 200. Isaac Richardson was joined by Adhrit Pande and the two looked to attack, adding 49 runs in the final 6 overs, with Richardson striking two 6s down the ground on his way to unbeaten 56*. Cookham wrapped up on imposing 249 for 2 in 40 overs, although on a flat track this still felt chasable.

Following a long tea break (moaned about by several members of the Cookham squad), the match resumed with Marcus Downie and Johnny O’Donnell taking the new ball. Despite the odd wayward delivery, the young opening pair certainly held their own, and soon started making inroads, with Adhrit Pande taking a good catch at gully off O’Donnell. Downie followed this up in the next over dismissing the other opener with a slightly harsh LBW decision. In his final over O’Donnell picked up his second wicket, and Cookham’s third, to leave the hosts reeling at about 40 for 3 off 8 overs. Having initially declared himself injured, Aaron Calver decided he did want to bowl and entered the attack, picking up a wicket of his own soon after.

Then the moment James Taylor has waited half a lifetime for. Great Kingshill’s larger than life captain Ross Thorburn strode to the crease just as Taylor entered the attack. Having barely mentioned all day that he was sitting on 499 club wickets, Taylor saw his opportunity to finally reach his illustrious milestone. Having had a close LBW turned down earlier in the over, he clean bowled Thorburn with a trademark late in-swinging yorker and proceeded to hug the batsman he had just dismissed! After much celebrating, Taylor regained composure and looked like a new man with that particular monkey off his back, and proceeded to demolish the Great Kingshill middle order, ending with figures of 4 wickets for 8 runs from his 5 overs.

With the hosts now 8 down and barely past 60, the game was up! Mark Pateman got himself in on the action with a nonchalant caught and bowled to take the 9th wicket. Dashwood provided some lower order resistance and in particular looked to get after the unfortunate Harrison Atkinson, who bowled much better than his figures would suggest. Having scrapped Great Kingshill passed 100 (although you wouldn’t know as the scorebook seemed to stop counting at 86!), Pateman dismissed Dashwood for a well made 38 to give Cookham a thumping 143 run win!

Taylor then forced the obligatory photo with the very amiable Great Kingshill captain to commemorate his 500th wicket and the two teams stuck around for a drink together following the good-natured match. The recent run of 4 victories on the bounce, admittedly 2 under the command of Rob Mettler, have lifted some of the gloom around Isaac Richardson’s captaincy and for the first time this season, means that the Sunday XI have a positive record, with 10 wins and 9 defeats! Next week Cookham welcome Holyport, in what promises to be a feisty encounter.
