Odney v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 04 Jul 2021 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 77 runs

Match report Cookham Dean Sunday Friendly XI slumped to a disappointing defeat against local rivals Odney on Sunday.

With Cookham’s line up significantly weakened by a host of household Sunday names being absent due to (the subsequently cancelled) Colonel Garrett Cup, the visitors arrived knowing they’d have to put in a good performance against a strong and euthanistic Odney side. Following heavy rain overnight and during the morning, Richardson won the toss and chose to field first in the hope of making early break throughs.

Aaron Calver, returning from enjoying the full fruits of what university has to offer, opened the bowling, alongside Marcus Downie. Despite bowling accurately for his 4 overs, onlookers will be worried that Calver has begun on the slippery slope from gun prospect to ‘Isaac Richardson esc’ wasted talent as he looked knackered after his short spell! Marcus Downie recovered after a shaky first over (including a couple of beamers) to keep the home side subdued to a steady start, although the much-needed early breakthroughs eluded Cookham.

Experienced campaigners Ben Ralphs and James Taylor entered the attack as first change bowlers, and Ralphs quickly made the first breakthrough with the score on 39. However, this bought to the crease Odney’s key batsman Kelvin Baillie who made a hard hitting 72*. The run rate immediately increased and although Taylor was able to snaffle opener Wilkinson for 32, Odney started to take control. On a pitch where it was difficult to score boundaries due to the wet outfield, Odney kept the scoreboard moving along effectively, by continuingly sneaking quick singles, much to the frustration of Cookham players. Mark Pateman bowled well and got Cookham’s third wicket with the score on 125 (in around the 25th over). Harrison Atkinson bowled better than his figures would suggest, as he had to bowl with a wet ball against set experienced batters. After a rain deluge at around the 28th over, Odney returned with plenty of wickets in hand, for a late innings onslaught. Mike Rosevear picked up the wicket of Mornard (25) late on, but not before Odney had got themselves up to an imposing looking 196 from their 35 overs.

With a significantly depleted batting line up, Richardson almost gave himself a nosebleed by putting himself as an opener alongside Yeshua Bhatti. Cookham got off to a decent enough start before Richardson looped a catch to the cover fielder, to be dismissed for a scratchy 18, with the score on 47 in the 12th over. Bhatti fell shortly afterwards for a well-made 29, including a few classy boundaries. Tanish Mehta was out unfortunately stumped for a duck soon after, as the ball rebounded off the keepers pads onto the stumps. Ralphs and Taylor steady the ship for a time, but Cookham soon started falling well behind the rate, as Odney deployed a series of slow ‘dibbly dobbly’ type bowlers who proved difficult to get away on a difficult track. Taylor was next to go, quickly followed by Calver, as Cookham’s defeat became increasingly inevitable. Ralphs battled hard for his eventual 27, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, as the darkness and drizzle closed in. Marcus Downie and Harrison Atkinson played a couple of nice shots late on. Mark Pateman added some late innings cheer by reverse sweeping his first ball for a couple but Cookham ended well short of the target finishing on 119 for 8.

In truth this display was not Cookham’s finest hour, with the weather and a turgid nature of the pitch only adding to Cookham’s frustration. Cookham are yet to confirm the opposition for next week, but will need to improve to avoid a 3rd straight defeat, as the increasingly loud whispers of discontent once again return to haunt captain Richardson.
