Knotty Green v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 13 Jun 2021 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Cookham Dean Sunday Friendly XI enjoyed a comprehensive 7 wicket win against Knotty Green on Sunday.
With a run of 3 straight victories, and what Jonny Gay had officially declared a ‘Character XI’, Cookham arrived in good spirits. However, things got off to a bad start as much maligned captain Isaac Richardson lost the toss and Cookham were forced to field. The fact the this meant the team would miss England’s Euro opener against Croatia, combined with temperatures in the high 20s, meant disharmony was quick to spread. Cookham did also not receive the warmest of welcomes from a local resident who threatened to report all the cars parked on the road for infringing on the pavement. With cars moved and pleasantries exchanged the match got underway.
Finlan and Ralphs took the new ball and Knotty Green got off to a flyer, reaching 33 off 4 overs, with opener ‘Jonny P’ launching into several boundaries. Thankfully, Ralphs dismissed Jonny P (28) in the sixth over to avert fears that Cookham could be chasing a score in excess of 300. Nonetheless Knotty Green still progressed well, reaching 69 for 1 off 14 overs. Change bowlers, father and son duo Kulvinder and DJ Singh, entered the attack and both got a wicket early in their spells reducing the hosts to 95 for 3 at the halfway stage. Clearly feeling that Knotty Green could do with a few more runs to make a game of it, captain Richardson entered the attack and kindly gifted the batsman some much needed impetus. At 154 for 3 off 27 overs things were threatening to get away from Cookham before Kulvinder picked up his second wicket. Then followed a rapid collapse as returning Sunday favourite Jonny Gay and ‘U19 bowler of the year 2019’, James Milligan (aka the spin twins) entered the attack and ripped through the lower middle order. Gay dismissed Knotty Green’s top scored ‘Kay’ for 56 (amongst his 3 victims) with a well taken stumping by keeper Zac Kennedy leading to Gay’s iconic ‘puffed out chest walk’. James Milligan continually fooled the batsman who couldn’t handle how little the ball was turning. James Taylor would have been devastated to miss out on the action as a very small u 11 batted at 10. Following a tight last 10 overs the home side finished on 195 for 9 off their 40 overs.
In response, Cookham opened the innings with Gay and James Le Fleming (Le Fleming playing as a specialist batsman as he was unable to bowl due to his bruised ego). Gay made a quick fire 26 before being dismissed with the score on 51 after 8 overs. Zac Kennedy then came to the crease and combined with Le Fleming to launch into an attacking onslaught, making light work of whatever Knotty Green could throw at them. A succession of lusty blows, endangering nearby cars and children, soon had Cookham motoring towards victory. Cookham had reached 170 for 1 in the 21st over, with the victory target in view before Zac Kennedy (47) managed to walk past a deliver by u11 bowler George Godwin (some estimates put his age as low as 8). Le Fleming then through away his chance at a first career hundred as he holed out for 86. Nonetheless Jake Richardson (15*) and Kirk Luciw (11*) managed to steer Cookham over the line with over 15 overs remaining.
With 4 wins on the bounce, surely some of the question marks over captain Richardson’s future must now be laid to rest, at least in the short term. Attention turns to the Village Cup next Sunday, and as a result the friendly fixture has been cancelled.
