Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v South Hampstead on Sun 06 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 22 runs

Match report With all eyes on the Village Cup on Sunday, Cookham Dean Friendly XI entertained South Hampstead CC in a tightly contested low scoring thriller at Odney.

The day got off to a bad start with Taine Richards turning up at Odney rather than Cookham amongst much confusion and hilarity! Permanently under pressure captain Richardson returned to the fold, (despite having injured himself by ‘walking’ in the week) following his sides much improved performance in his absence the previous Sunday. Having won the toss Richardson boldly chose to bat first despite neither of his openers yet being in attendance. Following some rapid padding up, father and son duo, Kulvinder and DJ Singh took to the crease. Cookham’s side looked on disappointedly to see that South Hampstead had some very decent looking opening bowlers leading James Taylor to comment, ‘We wouldn’t have had to put up with this if Reading Lawyers hadn’t cried off.’

Despite battling hard, both openers fell inside the first 10 overs, leaving Cookham 29 for 2 off 10. Matt Dilley (having rebranded himself as a Sunday batsman) looked to be making some headway before being dismissed for 15. The quality of the bowling and difficulty of the pitch was emphasised by Saturday 2nds Captain Parminder Mangat struggling to get going before getting out for 10. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals on a pitch that was difficult to time the ball. Cookham’s main counterattack came from Davinder Kumar, who made a swashbuckling 21 (although if he had connected with half of his big swings, he may have been closer to 50!). Cookham continued to limp on, reaching 95 for 7 off 27 overs. Regular number 11 Frazer Finlan (promoted to number 10) blasted a quickfire 15 including a big 6 down the ground, ably assisted by Mike Rosevear (4*) with his first runs of the season. However, Cookham were still dismissed within their 40 overs for what looked a below par 135.

In response South Hampstead got off to a slow but steady start, reaching 27 without loss in the first 10 overs. However, Finlan, no doubt looking to prove a point to the onlooking 2nd and 3rd team captains, made 2 quick breakthroughs to reduce the visitors to 39 for 2. Kulvinder Singh and James Taylor entered the attack and continued the squeeze. Kulvinder took 3 well deserved wickets as Cookham started to take control of the match, whilst Taylor went wicketless in his opening spell, as he was reduced to begging captain Richardson not to remove him from the attack. Taylor also bemoaned himself as the ‘unluckiest bowler in the club’ following a close LBW and stumping shout being turned down in quick succession. Matt Dilley dismissed the dangerous looking ‘Jon’ for 11 with a direct hit run out. With South Hampstead 77 for 6 off 26 overs, DJ Singh was introduced into the attack and took a wicket with his first ball, with a well taken catch at square leg by his father. Taylor finally got his breakthrough in his second spell with a sharp stumping by Dave Brooks, meaning he could finally start enjoying his day. Despite Kulvinder dropping a catch off his son’s bowling, DJ was able to take the final wicket to wrap up a 22 run victory for Cookham.

It was a good victory against a decent standard of opposition, with a tight disciplined bowling display. Next up Cookham face Knotty Green away.
