Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Prestcold on Sun 25 Apr 2021 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 5 Wickets

Match report Cookham Dean’s Sunday XI fell to close fought 5 wicket defeat at a windy Rickett’s Field on Sunday afternoon against Prestcold. Returning captain Isaac Richardson (who had gone AWOL for the first fixtures of the season), returned to skipper the side, and was immediately under fire from his own side for his decision to bat first on a day which was only set to get colder as the afternoon went on.

Mettler and Maroudas were chosen as the opening pairing and got Cookham off to a fast start, with an aggressive and exciting ‘brand of cricket’. Prestcold’s bowling attack was led by no less than 3 members of the Rosier family (apparently the 4th member was away), who all provided stiff competition to Cookham’s batting line up. Nonetheless the openers put on 86 in quick time for the first wicket before Mettler fell for 47. Maroudas continued on, utilising all of the team’s luck (as he was dropped 3 times) to make a well-constructed 71. Cookham’s middle order all made starts, with Noel-Baker’s 25 a highlight, but a continual stream of wickets pegged back the second half of the innings. Cookham ended up on 208 for 9 from their 40 overs.

In response, Prestcold got off to a difficult start with a fired-up Frazer Finlan (who has recently rebranded himself as Maui from the Disney film Moana), getting an early wicket, with Zac Kennedy taking an excellent catch at second slip. Cookham’s young cordon of Milligan and Kennedy ensured a constant stream of ‘chat’ and occasional ‘whooping’ from the slips through-out. Noel-Baker also made an early breakthrough to reduce Prestcold to 27-2 in the first 8 overs. However, Mayhew (59) and Benham (97*) then came together to put together a 100-run partnership to take the game away from Cookham. Cookham’s change bowlers fared less well than the openers, with James Taylor following his duck with the bat, with a wicketless afternoon with the ball. His mood was not improved by some comical overthrows provided by James Milligan. Cookham wasted a couple of catching opportunities with Richardson misjudging two sky-ers and Mahmood palming a difficult chance over the boundary for 6.

With Richardson facing growing criticism over his bowling choices, he threw the ball Maroudas, hoping he could use some of his prized aggression that has made him such a successful MMA star. Maroudas duly delivered taking 2 wickets to bring Cookham back into contention. Salah Mahmood also bowled a tidy spell from the Pavilion end (despite a string of no balls), taking a wicket and setting up a close finish. However, one of the many Rosier’s came to the crease to guide Prestcold over the line, whilst cruelly leaving Benham stranded on 97*, denying him what would have been a well deserved hundred.

Whilst Cookham will undoubtedly be disappointed to lose this tight fixture, it was an entertaining afternoon against a good-natured opposition.
