Match report COOKHAM DEAN KESTRELS LEARN A LESSON IN LINE AND LENGTH BOWLING AS A STRONG HENLEY U9 OUTIFT ENJOYED THEIR DAY MORNING OUT IN BERKSHIRE

Father’s day 2018 and what a way to spend it. The early morning drizzle got some of the parents excited about a rain enforced lie-in, but Coach David headed down to the club and declared the wicket playable. With the Holy Trinity School Charity ball having taken a few prisoners in the Kestrel parent ranks, the boys rolled in and there were cups of tea on order, seats placed by the boundary to rest weary heads and Coach Gary focused the boy’s minds on the game at hand. A keen Henley U9 outfit had turned up early and were- demonstrating their extra year looking sharp in a well-schooled pre-match practice.

With two matches running in parallel it was a good chance for the depth of the U8 squad to spread their wings and the Kestrels took to the field for the first innings. There was definitely something in the air, potentially too much candy floss at the Cookham Fete the day before.. who knows, but the laser sights were switched off and Coach Gary’s seagull impression had a good airing as he signalled wide after wide from the middle. Amongst the action, there were some moments of success from the bowling with James Cranfield, Archie and Max Phillis all recording respectable figures. In the outfield, Cookham were able to deliver yet again determined fielding, strong backing-up (and some outrageous flossing from behind the stumps). George - athletic on the boundary demonstrated his ‘long stop’ barrier preventing boundaries on two occasions and on-side cordon of Orson, Archie and Ollie all just missing out on a catches this week set the balance in Henley’s favour. Despite some superb wicket seeking throwing-in by Theo and Zac, Henley managed to deliver a solid 69 runs from the bat - unfortunately supplemented with 78 extras setting the Kestrels a target of 148 to win. Still, the boys were smiling and Coach Gary – working his way through three (yes I was counting) Jammy dodgers, mulled things over at the mid-innings break.

After the break and a moral boosting team talk, the Kestrels Archie and Max stepped up to the crease and in an attempt to undo some of the teams loose bowling, made progress with the bat setting things up for Theo (11 retired) and Henry B (10 retired) to get things moving along nicely. James Cranfield continued in the same vein (9 retired) supported by Zac at the other end who demonstrating he had listening at training with his bat extension on show as he ran between the wickets. Zac unfortunate to be bowled by Henley’s man of the match “Harry” made way for Ollie who clearly was chomping at the bit hitting 4 boundary’s in his innings of 17 retired. Orson and George were last to bat this week for the Kestrels and with balls running out, had limited opportunity to shine, but they can look forward to being top of the batting order for the home derby against Cookham Kites our U9 team on Sunday. With Cookham not far behind Henley with the bat by the end of the innings, it was the superior bowling from the more experienced Henley U9 side that won the day giving away only 35 extras to Cookham 78. A great morning, not the result we were after, but happy faces all round.
