Match report A MAIDEN WIN FOR THE COOKHAM DEAN KESTRELS AS BATTING STRENGTH AND AGILE FIELDING WIN THE DAY AT HURLEY

In their opening account for the 2018 season, the Kestrels met for their first match away at Hurley U8/9s on a balmy summers evening. With anticipation in the air, Head Coach Gary Knight squeezed in some last minute bowling practice ahead of play whilst, assistant coach Mark Gurney, nervously sharpened his pencil, ahead of what was his initiation to the complexities of scoring “Charlie Cricket” – Berkshire County Crickets newest invention.

With Hurley winning the toss and opting to open the batting, the Kestrels bowling line up opened with Jenson and Ollie from the riverside end, bowling what would be the first of 9 “super overs”. As the players got used to the pitch setting, length of the wicket and the fact that they would be finished so late that there would be no time do any school work, the match got into full swing. Hurley’s opening batsman Thomas took some beating - eventually retiring on 20, but by this time the Kestrels were working their way through the middle order at the other end, with Jake Smith taking a great catch at mid-on, Ben knocking the stumps out of the ground, and some gymnastic ability in the field by Josh and cracking throwing by Arthur resulting in a well-deserved run out for the Kestrels. Following the advice of Coach Gary, the Kestrels ensured the run rate was kept to a minimum with strong fielding and backing-up all round – notably Henry who saved the overthrows on multiple occasions. Given the planned late start, the Duckworth-Lewis calculation came into play and the match was reduced to 18 overs. Hurley ended their innings with 95 for 3 wickets.

After tea, the Kestrel’s Zach and Dilraj opened the account for Cookham Dean. Steady heads from both ensured a solid start with quick singles aplenty, kick-starting the run-fest that was about to ensue. After Dilraj succumbed to a good line and length ball and a mix up on an over-through saw Zach run out, up stepped Arthur and Jake whom then proceeded to demonstrate the art of boundary batting, both retiring gracefully having met the maximum 20 runs - side-lined for a return should they be needed. Henry was just warming up at the crease when he was unfortunately on the wrong end of a run-out decision, but by this time the match had been won as Josh and Ben picked their way through the good balls to keep the runs ticking over. The Kestrels retired Ben and Joshua to ensure all team members were able to bat. Ollie and Jenson stepped in with 2 overs remaining to put the icing on the cake delivering some quick singles to end the innings with Cookham Kestrels achieving a convincing win hitting 128 for 3 to secure the victory for the visiting side.
