Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Little Marlow on Sat 29 Sep 2018 at 12.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 9 runs
Match report
An enjoyable and competitive match was played between local rivals Cookham Dean and Little Marlow at the Theatre of Dreams to mark the end of the 2018. A huge crowd consisting of three lady cricketers, George Waghorn's Dad, Lord Patrick and Meli the Cockapoo turned up to watch the last match under the captaincy of club Stalwart J Taylor. Taylor confirmed his reputation as a complete Tosser by calling correctly and electing to bat on what seemed another Stringer bowler- hating track. Simon D'Ardenne and new Cookham poster boy Ben Ralph opened proceedings and recorded a blistering opening partnership of 130 from 15 overs to put the home side firmly in the ascendant. However when Ralph ( eyeing up a debut century) was bowled for 73 , things took a turn for the worse and the scoring dried up. Bradley and Kumar both went for 11, swiftly followed by D'Ardenne (52), who later claimed that losing Ben felt like having the oxygen removed from his "homoerotic" fantasy. When Waghorn (1) missed a straight one and John Gay (1) was dismissed for the inevitable LBW, the atmosphere on the home team balcony turned decidedly sour. However Taylor (20) and a super knock from young protégé James Le Fleming (37 not out) ensured that a competitive total of 249 for 8 was achieved. After a fair to middling tea, (notable due to the "trendy" decision to have 30% jam only scones) , the home side took the field and in keeping with the Youth Policy handed the new nut to Frazer and Le Fleming. Unfortunately for Cookham, the opening partnership of Ali & Mahmood got off to a flier with particular punishment for young "Boots" Finlan. Later it was discovered that Frazer had been awarded under 19 bowler of the year and he admitted that the celebrity status had gone to his head. Wily captain Taylor decided that the pace needed to come off and he turned to his slow Bowlers, D'Ardenne making the breakthrough having Ali(44) caught on the boundary with a great catch from James Le Fleming and Andy Finlan dismissing Mahmood stumped with some great glove work from diminutive GloveMan Alfie Agar. D'ardenne (2-26) then snared Hussain(18) and the home side thought they were in, however celebrations were short lived as the watchful Shariff (44) and the explosive) Hassain (29) started to inch Marlow into a winning position, the latter launching Taylor for several enormous sixes. They did not however reckon with "golden boy" Ben Ralph who rocked up and claimed 5 wickets for a mere 18 runs (also having a hand in a run out after the eagle eyed Taylor had launched one in from Mid Wicket) The last batsman was bowled in the final over, to send the thronging crowd crazy and the Dean recorded a 9 run victory. To mark the occasion of Taylor's final game, a team photo was taken, a few beers were consumed and the following questions discussed Why does Kyle take guard like an "intense"Chanderpaul? Will Ben Ralph leave Marlow Park and join a real Cricket Club? Should John Gay be humanely put down this winter like a lame racehorse? Is James Taylor's win ratio 0f 64% the highest in Cookham Friendly history? ALL IN ALL IT'S BEEN A FUN SEASON, LET'S DO IT All AGAIN NEXT YEAR !
