Cookham Dean Cricket Club 3rd XI v Chenies and Latimer on Sat 21 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Cookham Dean 3's hosted Chenies & Latimer 1's on Saturday at the Odney Club. With the extended stint of summer weather creating a relatively true track and a lightning fast outfield, it was no surprise that Chenies elected to bat on winning the toss.

The Dean opened up with their quartet of youthful medium-fast bowlers, as Chenies openers Mohammed and Kiani made a steady start. Lemon bowled especially well, maintaining an excellent length and proving difficult to get away, but it was le Fleming that made the breakthrough, inducing a frustrated Kiani to ladle a regulation catch to D'Ardenne at mid-off. Having made a meal of this regulation catch, D'Ardenne's protestation about the positioning of the sun were met with scorn by team mates, especially Cutting and Taylor who had heard it all before! Anderson joined Mohammed, and the two continued to build cautiously before Mohammed skied le Fleming (2-31) to mid-on, where Dempster took a good catch running backwards; Mohammed departing for a classy 67. At 104-2 from 25 the match was evenly poised, however the introduction of Taylor and D'Ardenne bought about an upping of the scoring rate as the aggressive Pickard took a liking to the pies served up by both. The reluctant Austin (1-40) was introduced, and looked to be the only Dean bowler likely to contain the batsmen as Chenies rapidly picked up the rate, brutalising the Dean's flagging attack. Cutting did briefly provide hope, bowler Anderson for a solid 47 and having Pickard well caught by a diving D'Ardenne at mid-wicket for a rapid 60. However this only bought Dhiya (49n.o) and Rehman (19n.o) to the crease, as they powered Chenies to an imposing 283-5 from their 50 overs. Special mention to Tom "Teflon" Wells-Cole on his keeping debut, who failed to catch anything behind the stumps, but did appear to catch spine aids as he hobbled around like a bloke who'd just had a great night at Jeffrey Dahmer's.

The Cookham reply got off to the best possible start as openers Wells-Cole and skipper Gay went after the Chenies spinners. Seduced by the turn on offer and the lack of lateral movement for the seamers, Chenies probably overdid it with the old ball, allowing the openers to put on a quickfire 110 for the first wicket before Gay fell for 35 off the canny bowling of Chenies skipper Vessey. Wells-Cole continued to play fluently until he was well held at mid-on trying to take on Vessey's medium pace for a fluent and classy 81 (missing spine non-withstanding). A tense period followed as the two new batsmen looked to settle against the probing medium pace of Vessey and Zia, who bowled well to really take the momentum out of the Dean chase as the required run rate started to rise. At this stage, special mention must be given to the umpiring of Taylor, who triggered Dempster LBW when he had dug out a Zia yorker with the toe of his bat. Cutting and Green came and went quickly as they tried to pick up the run rate, and at this stage the Dean appeared to have badly lost their way at 183-5 with only 13 overs left to chase the required 100 runs. D'Ardenne joined le Fleming and the pair looked to pick up the rate before le Fleming drilled Bilal straight to cover for a determined 30. At this point the chase looked over, but D'Ardenne and Austin combined to put on 67 in 8 overs, as they went on the offensive with some help from the Chenies boundary fielders. With the equation down to 17 from 2 overs and the batsmen set, Cookham fancied their chances, but Austin was well run out for a fluent 29 going for a tight second, then with 8 required from 7 balls, D'Ardenne holed-out to deep extra cover for a rapid 56, instead of pushing the single and backing himself to get 7 off the final over. This strategic error left the job for the tail, and Taylor selflessly skied to point looking for the boundary before Hill was run out looking for a second run. Usually, a Taylor golden duck would be reported on with delight by the author, but the uncharacteristically selfless nature of the dismissal precludes celebration.

All said and done, the Dean were all out for 277, a spirited effort which fell short by 6 runs.
