Cookham Dean Cricket Club 2nd XI v Beaconsfield 2 on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
An under-strength Cookham Dean 2's kept their TVL Division 4b promotion push on track with an ultimately comfortable win over mid-table Beaconsfield 2's on Saturday at a baking Rickett's Field.
On winning the toss it was no surprise that Beaconsfield elected to bat on a flat looking deck. However, the prevailing consensus was called into question early as Lucas, enjoying a rare outing with the new ball, induced Odera to feather to Lambden, and the early introduction of Gandesha's off spin saw Keen dismissed in the same fashion, The true nature of conditions became apparent as young opening Randeev smoothly progressed his innings with support from the watchful Corbin. The Dean rotated their bowling options without success as Beaconsfield moved themselves into an excellent position at 200-2 from 40 overs. The returning Mangat, who had bowled a probing opening spell without reward, eventually secured the breakthrough, dismissing Corbin for a determined but time-consuming 44. Young spinner Ayub quickly followed up to finally bowl Randeev for an accomplished 137; an excellent innings during which he barely offered a chance. Musk and Shepherd remained unbeaten, and combined to push Beaconsfield to a competitive 274-4 from their full allocation of 52 overs, Although a strong looking total, the consensus was that the lack of acceleration in the last 10 overs of the Beaconsfield innings had left the opposition total vulnerable and given the Dean a good chance.
After a fine tea, during which Mrs James nailed the strength of the tea in the communal pot, the Cookham reply got underway with possibly the dirtiest opening combination of in 2's history strolling to the middle! Encouraged by the lack of assistance for the seamers, Beaconsfield opened with spin, and despite the odd close moment, openers Lucas & D'Ardenne progressed steadily, to move the Dean to a promising 82-0 from 17 overs. However, the introduction of seam and the new ball bought immediate results as Lucas was nailed absolutely plumb LBW by Denzil for 41, and in the next over D'Ardenne miscued Peace to mid-wicket for 44. Lucas was quick to congratulate youngster Salah on his honest and absolutely correct decision to give him out LBW. With the Cookham reply in danger of stumbling, Mettler joined Sohil Mangat and the two did a great job of maintaining the scoring while minimising risk. When Mangat fell to the medium pace of Corbin for a solid 41, Beaconsfield sensed an opportunity to turn the screw. However, Lambden joined Mettler, who was going well, and the two decided that the time was right to push on. Lambden rotated the strike well, allowing Mettler to really open up and decisively put Cookham in a strong position with a flurry of boundaries, before he eventually holed-out off the spin of Musk for a rapid and ultimately match-winning 81. Lambden (34 n.o) and Brar finished the job to get the Dean over the line at 276-4 from 45.5 overs, Brar asserting that his two boundaries had secured his 2's place for another decade.
The Dean travel to Hillingdon Manor next week, and will be looking to maintain recent momentum, while hoping that Taplow, our rivals for the final promotion dpot, slip-up.
