Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Binfield on Sun 04 Sep 2022 at 12.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 81 runs

Match report Cookham Friendly XI recorded a resounding 81 run victory over Binfield at Rickett’s Field on Sunday. Captain Richardson lost the toss and Cookham were put into bat on an overcast day with a spot of rain in the air.

Cookham opened with stalwart Dave Brooks and returning favourite Jonny Gay (who seems to play more on a Sunday now he’s left the club, then he did when he was a regular). Cookham got off to a fast start with Gay in particularly looking to target the opening bowlers. Gay (24) fell in the 5th over with the score on 35. Rob Mettler took up the attack and reached 38 in no time at all before being out caught behind. Thankfully he walked, as despite there being a clear edge, as all who witnessed could attest to, mystifyingly umpire Frazer Finlan shock his head! Finn Robinson (stolen at the last minute from the u15s after Richardson’s increasingly desperate pleas for players) was next to go caught behind for 4. James Le Fleming (20), who often enjoys slapping a few cheap Sunday runs, quickly got into his stride, but was dismissed off the first ball of Williams, a young spinner who had only arrived at the 20 over mark and would prove to be a nemesis to much of Cookham’s middle order.

Having kept the scoreboard ticking along and watching wickets fall at the other end, Brooks (35) was out in bizarre fashion, hit wicket, whilst attempting a late cut. There was initially some confusion as Brooks just walked off rather than attempting a single, only for the offending bail to be spotted. James Taylor, without a single victory to his name from his previous 13 attempts this season, was out softly, chipping one straight up in the air off Williams, leaving Cookham teetering on 133 for 6 off 27 overs. Isaac Richardson (23) and Peter Manchester (29*) came together and looked to put together a counter attacking partnership. After being tamely dropped once, Richardson again couldn’t resist slogging the spinner and was out caught at long-on. Cookham’s tail of Pateman (0), Watt (1) and Finlan (0) offered little to no resistance, with the final 4 wickets falling for just 11 runs to leave Cookham bowled out in 36 overs on a final score of 182.

Opening bowler Peter Manchester, fresh off an evening playing a gig at a boozy 40th birthday party at the ‘rough end of Goring’ had to resist the urge to punch many of his teammates for the amount of badly thought-out northern jibes being thrown his way. Despite this he immediately got Cookham off to a good start, dismissing Gupta for 0, with a fine catch taken by Peter Watt at point. Manchester and Finlan kept things tight in the opening spell as Binfield struggled to build any sort of momentum. Manchester picked up two more wickets to leave the visitors 38 for 3 in the 13th over. First change bowler Mark Pateman was incredibly unlucky not to take a wicket straight away following a comical dropped catch at cover by Finlan (followed by a bad missed run out by captain Richardson in the same ball), and moments later Manchester dropped a tough chance at mid-on. However, Pateman would soon find rewards, with opener Devarakonda (29) pulling a rare poor ball directly to Brooks at square-leg. Pateman then ripped through the middle order, taking two more wickets, including a sharp stumping by Mettler who got reward for knocking the bails off at every opportunity throughout the innings, to leave the visitors in disarray at 71 for 6.

After 7 fruitless overs, the wilting rose of Cookham Dean cricket club, James Taylor was rightly taken out of the attack, allowing unsung hero Peter Watt to take 2 late wickets, to add to his 2 fine catches, in a stellar display from the very occasional cricketer. Promising young spinner Finn Robinson picked up 2 wickets from the other end as Binfield were all out for 101 in 33 overs.

With the curse of James Taylor finally broken, Cookham will look to build on a good afternoons work as they look to make it 3 wins on the bounce next time out at Holyport.
