Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Prestcold on Sun 24 Apr 2022 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets
Match report
Following a humbling defeat in the first Sunday match of the season, the Cookham side were relieved to see the reassuring figure of regular friendly captain Isaac Richardson return to lead the side, after prioritising a trip to Disneyland over the first game of the season.
Cookham’s opponents were Prestcold, a team notoriously dominated by the Rosier family, as Cookham looked to avenge their narrow defeat against the same opposition last season. Having lost the toss Cookham were placed into the field on a pleasant April afternoon. The match got off to a comically ‘village’ start as both correctly sized stumps and bails were slow to be located leading to a delay. Thankfully everyone turned a blind eye to the stumps at one end looking ever so slightly smaller than they should have, and the match commenced.
Frazer Finlan (or ‘Quinlan’ as he was named in the scorebook), charged in with the new ball with his Rapunzel length long hair causing him significant air resistance. He should have picked up an early wicket as the ever-confident James Milligan shelled a simple chance at first slip. His fellow opening bowler Davinder Kumar made 2 quick break throughs dismissing the first of the 4 x Rosier’s with Jake Richardson taking a catch at first slip. The green top pitch at Cookham was much more lively than usual with balls springing off the track from just back of a length. First change medium paced bowler Paddy Crowley (making only his second appearance for the Dean) took advantage of this fact by managing to bounce out opener Desbois for 15.
Cookham continued to maintain control as the visitors struggled to make significant headway on the challenging pitch with a slow outfield. Cookham’s pick of the bowlers, DJ Singh, ripped through the middle order, picking up an impressive 3 for 8 from his 6 overs leaving Prestcold around 60 for 6 at the halfway stage.
The Rosier’s then looked to galvanise their side with an impressive partnership between M and L Rosier as they accelerated through the latter stages of the innings. Quinlan returned for a final fiery spell, clean bowling both the Rosier’s in quick succession to the keep the final total down to 150. Special mention should go to Lashvein Srisankar and Adhrit Pande, who despite almost killing each other going for the same high catch, fielded superbly throughout.
As reward for their fielding Srisankar and Pande were given the opening batting slots. L and A Rosier took the new ball, and both made good use of the green pitch to give the youngsters a stern examination. After battling hard for the first 7 overs both fell in quick succession bringing Jake Richardson and James Milligan to the crease. Milligan, looking to redeem his fielding display, produced an uncharacteristically controlled batting performance and the two quickly put together a counter attacking partnership to take the game away from Prestcold. Richardson bought up his 50 first and then seemed to slow down at the begging of Milligan to allow ‘The Big Show’ to pass 50 with a 6 to win the match. Cookham completed their comfortable 8 wicket victory within 30 overs.
Isaac Richardson will be relieved to get a win under his belt early in the season to delay the inevitable mutiny. Cookham Sunday Friendly return to action next week against Magdalen, with captain Richardson again expected to be absent, owing to his poor commitment.
