Match report In the 2nd week in succession, Rob Mettler continued his reign of the ever changing Sunday friendly XI against Binfield. Unfortunately scrambling 11 players was not quite met but club legend Ben Millar stepped up to make 10.

Without a toss being made, Binfield put Cookham into bat with and a strong top order batting lineup looked towards amassing a good score on a good wicket. This hope lasted only 2 balls as Gay was out 2nd ball without score.

The more reliable Richardson brother and Bajwa knuckled down and put on a much needed and steady partnership with Richardson hitting some imposing shots and Bajwa looking more and more stylish as his innings continued. When the partnership was broken Mettler joined in the fun and played some glorious back foot cuts and drives against a spinning bowling partnership of 2 ends of the cricket spectrum; a skinner 14 year old and an a less so skinny 50+ spinner.

Binfield having had enough of this brought on a very impressive quick spinner and their opening bowler that introduced the usual Sunday batting collapse. The ‘Big Show’ tried to increase the scoring rate but forgot to hit the ball and went for 9 and the hit and miss innings of Downie, Pateman and Luciw added very little to the score. Millar and Rosevear scored nicely for the last 2 overs and scraped to 175.

In response Downie and Pateman took the new ball. Downie- classy, fast, controlled. Pateman heady with his promotion to opening utilised his slips by seemingly aiming his first 2 balls directly to them! Both took wickets thanks to some excellent keeping and a leaping salmon style catch from Richardson that kept the run rate down.

A good partnership by Binfields Williams and Vine look to take the game into a tight
climax but in Gay’s first ball, a rank loopy leg side ball nicked a much needed wicket and from then on the run rate increased.

What should have been an comfortable end, Cookham stuttered with some standard woeful catching (no names Richardson, Gay, Millar, Rosevear). However with some top notch glove work from Mettler and Bajwa picking up wickets, victory was sealed.

2 wins in a row for a Mettler. Richardson back this week……….. 😉
