Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Middlesex Strikers on Sun 22 Aug 2021 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 2 runs
Match report
One of the great Sunday games was played out at Ricketts Field.
In the absence of regular Captain Isaac Richardson, (who according to the Maidenhead Advertiser is attending sessions with the same sports psychiatrist as Ben Stokes in order to combat stress and depression) Rob “Met Police” Mettler took the reigns to lead Cookham’s rag tag XI of the old and knackered and the promising but small.
Winning the toss and electing to bat as usual, Rob opened up with Lashvein and the pair batted defiantly in the face of some excellent bowling from Middlesex ( Sukh would not have looked out of place in TVL 1) Despite some controversy when Mike (Mr Mgoo) Rosevear triggered Rob early on for a caught behind down the Leg side (he was recalled sportingly), the home team went in to drinks at 76 for 0.
Lashvein eventually fell LBW to the canny Yuvi (a dismissal Rob described as “all kinds of out”) and then it was all about everyone’s favourite Sunday Flat Track Bully as Rob went into fifth gear and bludegeoned a fantastic 135 not out. There was some “Jack Leach” like support from Taylor and Milligan, the former was originally set to open but decided that number 3 was a safer bet after seeing the size of the opening bowler and Cookham ended on 220 for 4
In reply Middlesex started well, with Rahul putting on a steady 36 and Rav looking like he might finish the game in 15 overs, launching young John Caen for an enormous six from his first ball, however he had not reckoned with stalwart Dan Mathews who lulled him into a false shot and Rob scooped a catch for Cookham’s first wicket. The Middle order for the visitors was strong and Sunny (43), and Kultay (22) looked settled and were turning the tide…………..enter Kirk Luciw (introduced by Rob as everyone’s favourite Canadian) who bowled both of them out and it was game on again. Sukh was batting well although he was helped by two atrocious overs from Milligan ( 0 for 26) before Taylor had him snaffled down the leg side, caught by the excellent Keeper Jeevan Bains. Young Leg Spin wizard Adhrit Pande bowled a canny spell dismissing Yuvz for 19 but the visitors kept creeping up towards the total and it took a super spell from John O’Donnell (3 for 27) along with a cameo over from skipper Rob who got rid of Mandy to leave the visitors 9 down and requiring 4 from the last over.
After taking a quick double, Johnny O’Donnell held his nerve and bowled straight when needing two from two balls to win, Usure pushed firmly and set off for a single, however he hadn’t reckoned with our “thinly haired” superstar Rob who plucked the ball up and realizing he had time ran in and whipped of the bails to win the match and claim the glory.
The huge crowd erupted in ecstasy and there was a pitch invasion ( well Jeevans little brother legged it onto the pitch)…………………….a fantastic win and a great team effort.
