Match report Cookham Dean Friendly XI returned to action on Sunday afternoon at Rickett’s Field against Wokingham, with captain Richardson knowing only a convincing victory could keep his head off the chopping block, following a string of poor results.

With the match starting early and shortened to 35 overs to ensure both teams could get full misery out of England’s Euro Final defeat later that evening, Richardson won the toss and decided to bat first. Rob Mettler (drafted in to bolster the batting following the second Colonel Garratt postponement in 2 weeks) and Yeshua Bhatti opened the innings. On a good wicket Cookham made a strong start reaching 49 for 0 in the first 10 overs. As the change bowlers entered the attack, Mettler started to accelerate rapidly, as Wokingham’s mix of youngsters and seasoned pros started to feel the ill effects of Cookham’s onslaught in equal measure. Bhatti also started to move through the gears, with some handsome drives and pull shots. As Mettler neared his century some large 6s down the ground started to come out. Mettler bought up his hundred inside 24 overs and duly retired, with Cookham on around 170 at this stage. Bhatti took the lead at this point as he accelerated towards his first CDCC hundred, with Richardson joining in with a quick cameo 26 before softly getting caught at cover. Yeshua Bhatti bought up his hundred with 3 overs to go and walked off to a standing ovation. There was still time for Lashvein Srisankar to be run out for 8 whilst looking for late runs, with Cookham finishing on an imposing 260 for 2 off their 35 overs.

In response, Wokingham never really looked in the hunt, Finlan picked up the first wicket in the 5th over with the score on 13, and Davinder Kumar soon got in on the act to reduce Wokingham to 31 for 2 after 10. The pick of the bowlers was Dhananjai Singh who picked up 3 wickets in his 5 over spell, including Wokingham’s top scorer Evans to leave Wokingham reeling on 67 for 5 off 21 overs. Kashish Choudhary, making her first Sunday appearance, started impressively, producing a wicket maiden in her first over. Mike Rosevear bowled well for 3 overs, picking up a wicket, before losing his rhythm in the last over with a series of wayward deliveries! With darkness and rain closing in, Cookham wrapped up a comfortable victory by 124 runs with the visitors finishing on 136 for 8 off their 35 overs.

The day very much belonged to Yeshua Bhatti, with an impressive first Cookham Dean ton. Captain Richardson lives to fight another day, but the tests keep on coming with a tough trip lined up away to Beaconsfield next week, so Cookham will have to be at their best to produce another result.
