Marlow Park v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 09 May 2021 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Cookham Dean Sunday XI slipped to a crushing 6 wicket defeat against local rivals Marlow Park on Sunday.

Cookham were hampered from the outset as the Village Cup fixture on the same afternoon had taken priority and therefore Cookham were without some key players which limited captain Richardson’s selection choices and forced the last-minute recall of James Taylor (selected whilst mid-Sunday brunch with former CDCC stalwart Simon D’Ardenne). Following the wash out across the board on Saturday, the players were pleased to find the weather warm, if a little overcast. The Marlow Park team clearly were not too worried about the threat Cookham posed as they indulged in several pre-match pints before play commenced! Cookham won the toss and chose to bat first.

Opener Richardson (batting well above his station) fell early for 10, before Brooks (17) was joined by star player Samad Fallah, who together took the score beyond 50. Fallah was the lynch pin of the innings constructing a well made 62, ably assisted by Kirk Luciw with a hard hitting 15. However, Fallah struggled to find a partner who could bat with him for any concerted length of time as Cookham’s middle order all made starts but failed to go on. Fallah departing for 62 triggered a lower middle order collapse as Cookham slipped from 133-4 in the 28th over to 139-8 in the 31st. James Taylor survived a hattrick ball, and he along with U13 Dhananjai Singh (19) helped get Cookham up to something approaching a respectable score, with 186 from their 40 overs.

It was late afternoon before the second innings began, and the large crowds that had filled the park during the first innings began to disperse (maybe they were Cookham fans who were all too aware of what was about to happen). Things got off to a bad start for Cookham as Noel-Baker’s first over was dispatched for 4 fours, as Marlow Park got off to a fast start. Noel-Baker looked to have found some rhythm by his second over and dismissed opener Murza for 8, with a very well taken diving catch by keeper Brooks. However, hopes that this would stem the tide were quickly diminished as Vaughan (86*) and Lombard (31) launched into an onslaught with 4s and 6s raining down onto passers-by. With Marlow 98-1 off 10 overs, Cookham turned to some more experienced hands to try and wrestle back some measure of control, with Taylor and Fallah (sadly bowling spin rather than his fiery aggressive pace) entering the fray. Taylor dismissed Lombard and Stephens, whilst Fallah bowled accurately and was unfortunate not to take wickets himself, with a couple of close LBWs turned down and Richardson dropping a straightforward chance to dismiss Vaughan in the deep.

Despite this better spell for Cookham, Marlow were still romping towards victory at 154-3 off 25 overs. Mark Pateman entered the attack and immediately dismissed local journeyman Kyle Bradley for 10 thanks to an unbelievable catch at gully by U12 Lashvein Srisankar. Srisankar and fellow youngster Harrison Atkinson got some overs towards the end of the innings and they both bowled accurately with good economy rates. It was testament to how Cookham’s young team stuck at it, that it took until the 35th over before Marlow Park got over the line for a convincing 6 wicket win.

With 4 defeats in 5 to start the season, the axe is surely looming over captain Richardson’s neck, with a home fixture next weekend against RNVR, likely his last chance to save himself.
