Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v The Village on Sat 21 Sep 2019 at 12pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 67 runs
Match report
A fun and incident packed day marked the end of the 2019 season at Ricketts Field on Saturday. The opponents "The Village" are a great bunch and the game was played in a really good spirit.
Put into bat, Simon D'Ardenne and Yesh strode to the crease with purpose, the former particularly determined to "go big" with the ignominious threat of finishing below J Taylor in the batting averages a huge incentive to achieve. All seemed to be going according to plan as he hit two crisp boundaries before inexplicably carving the last ball of the first over tamely in the air and omitting a yelp of "oh no" as it sailed into the waiting clutches of the point fielder. Simon then sloped off and did not appear from the dressing room for a full twenty minutes, which was roughly the time it took for Taylor's grin of delight to disappear! This brought the wild haired Marxist agitator Jake Richardson to the crease and when he spooned it up to mid wicket only to see it dropped, we knew that unlike Jeremy Corbyn, it was going to be his day. He scored a magnificent 119 not out and was backed up by Rob (31), who had the plumbest LBW I have ever seen and Kyle (26 not out) which meant the home side posted a respectable 226. This was also notable for a particularly gribbly effort from an out of sorts looking Jonny Gay, who scratched around for 5 overs for his contribution of 2!
After feasting on a much more reasonably priced tea from Sainsburys (Country Stores are now dead to me), Cookham took the field confident they could defend the total and feeling happy. However, dark clouds were gathering as Simon D'Ardenne no doubt seething over his failure rolled a ball into the unsuspecting Taylor's head as he lay stretching..............WTF? Obviously there were sulking, malignant thoughts brooding under that huge bouffant thatch of hair as he proceeded to follow up his act of naked aggression by dropping a complete dolly from Taylor's first over, this was either on purpose or incompetence, you decide?. Frazer FInlan ( no balls aside) bowled really well and took 2 wickets, and also our guest spinner Ibrahim took 2 more . Rob Mettler showed what a versatile cricketer he is, taking 3 wickets in the middle order bowling his "fizzers" off five pacers, if only his hair had as much fortitude! The Village middle order looked quite decent with De Mellow, Bosh and Cressey all making starts and when Bilal started smashing the bowling including one painful over from Kirk ( who thankfully was not in Blackface) the visitors looked in with a shout. However Jonny turned to his "go to man" Taylor who snapped up three wickets in one over including a magical C&B and the Village were all out for 159.
We then enjoyed a lovely BBQ courtesy of Sue, drank beers and fannied about on the slip cradle whilst wondering what the hell we will do with our weekends in the off season!
Interviewed after the game about Simon's appalling behaviour, Taylor responded " Stats don't lie, I had a better batting average, more wickets and even more sixes than Simon this year, It's Meli the cockapoo I am worried about as Simon will undoubtedly be taking out his frustration on her later".
Enjoy the winter chaps, see you all again next year.
