Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v White Waltham on Sun 28 Jul 2019 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 2 Wickets
Match report
An action packed game was played out between two stalwarts of the Maidenhead district on Sunday, most of it caused by the attention seeking antics of Simon D'Ardenne.
It all started when a cricket starved and fired up Taylor suggested that he bowl a few in the nets to Simon. He was joined by "retired" bower Rob Mettler and after snicking off from Taylor, Simon went to sweep an innocuous looking delivery from Mets and ended up top-edging into his massive hooter..............CLARET EVERYWHERE! After a visit to the local A&E which was closed ( due to Tory cuts) Simon returned to announce he would be playing for the opposition under the guise of his alter ego "Cyril Sneer".
Cookham batted first in time honoured tradition and a good opening spell from Ring bought the early wicket of Mettler, who chipped up to cover and then walked off mouthing obscenities and looking like he was going to find a small woodland creature to torture. Freddie Noel Baker went cheaply and this was followed by Greg Davis who played a decent hand including one enormous bigun before being pouched for 37. Young Sam Rollet (16) looked compact and technically correct, once he develops his rig and pipes he will definitely be one to watch out for in future. There then followed a succession of cheap wickets including a suicidal self run out from Taylor which was reminiscent of watching Okinawan civilians jumping off cliffs to avoid the advancing marines. Throughout the innings, Jake Richardson batted superbly and bought up a well deserved century before being caught on the boundary from the bowling of Sneer who had also managed to dismiss skipper and brother Isaac, much to his delight.
Following an excellent tea including delicious cricket themed cupcakes made by Issac's better half, Cookham took the field only to discover that Simon had "Alpha'd" his way into opening the batting alongside previously unbeaten Waltham Opener Elliot ( see 2011 fixture). Due to some spurious bowling from Frazer, the two openers chasing 214 looked like a poor man's version of Roy & Bairstow and raced to 80 in no time. Mexico's greatest bowler was replaced by Freddie NB and the youngster snared Elliot (31) with the help of a great reflex catch from Keeper Mettler. D'ardenne / Sneer continued to bat well although his scoring was stifled by an accurate and nagging line from Taylor and after impatience got the better of him he was eventually stumped on 69 and given a rapturous send off back to the pavilion by the jubilant veteran.
A good spell from Maz was sandwiched between some indifferent bowling from Isaac and Greg "WG Disgrace" Davis but wickets tumbled and Dean looked on top. However a belligerent unbeaten dig of 59 from Scarborough, (Waltham's answer to Ben Millar) enabled the visitors to grab victory from the jaws of defeat in the penultimate over.
Simon was certainly "sneering" with delight after his eventful afternoon. In the post match interview he commented..............."It was the kind of up and down day that makes cricket such a great game and being a total badger I took enormous enjoyment playing against my usual club mates. The only spoiler was getting out to the balding, pot bellied chimpanzee Taylor, but I guess it just confirms what I have always known deep down......................he is the better man and the better cricketer.
A fun day all round and good to see the promising youngsters Rollett, Stubbings and Noel-Baker contributing and enjoying themselves.
Let's do it again next week.
