Match report PINKNEYS GREEN TOO STRONG FOR COOKHAM DEAN KESTRELS

Fielding an almost entirely different team from the side that beat Maidenhead & Bray on Friday, the Cookham Dean Kestrels ventured south of the A404 on Sunday to play a well-drilled Pinkneys Green team. Featuring a mix of U8 and U9 players, Pinkneys looked difficult to beat from the outset.

Winning the toss, the hosts chose to bat first, clearly confident of putting on a defendable total. They weren’t wrong. After some fine bowling from opening pair Zach and Theo, the runs (and extras) flowed, with batting contributions coming from all but one of the Pinkneys lineup. Sp§ecial mentions should go to Ben (16) and Tom (20) for their excellent placement and positive intent in the Pinkneys middle order, and to the final pair Amy and Caspar who added over 30 runs in the final three overs thanks to the batters’ excellent calling and running between the wickets. Despite more good bowling from Cookham’s Max, Alfie and Jenson, Pinkneys scrambled to an impressive total of 138 off their 20 overs.

At the innings break which saw parents reaching for bottles of sun cream on yet another scorcher of a day, the players disappeared off the field for an unexpected break of cakes, biscuits and squash. Retaking the field some 15 minutes later, a sugar-fuelled Jenson immediately signalled his intent and whacked the first ball of the Cookham Dean innings for four. He continued to look comfortable at the crease – amassing 20 runs off just 19 balls – before having to retire. Sadly from here on in the Pinkneys Green bowling unit kept things far too tight for the Kestrels who struggled to get the ball away. Max despatched a couple of very healthy fours to the boundary but after he was dimisssed (well caught in the deep) the runs dried up, and the Kestrels fell away from the required rate. Some more positive running and calling may have closed the gap on the scores but the Pinkneys Green side were ultimately too strong all round, limiting the Cookham Dean U8s to just 70 runs for a not-so-narrow loss, the first of the season.

We go again next weekend!
