Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Odney on Sun 09 Jul 2017 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 90 runs
Match report
A thoroughly entertaining and "proper sunday" match was played between the two giants of Cookham cricket at Ricketts Field. 2017 marks the inaugural match for the new "Tony Austin" trophy and the game was played in a fitting manner that Tony would have been proud of. The bone dry outfield and sunny conditions ensured that Cookham batted first and Rob"metlertarsal"Mettler was snared early in an excellent first spell of fast bowling with the new nut from Odney gun Finlay. Taine and Farmer Jake battled through to take the shine off and both batted well to set a decent platform and allay the fears of another embarrassing CDCC collapse. There was some good bowling especially from 7ft spin bowler Parsons who managed to extract some bounce from a Stringer pitch for the first time in 30 years, but Taine (49), Jake (67), Jonny (46), D'Ardenne (49 not out) and Tayls (41 not out) set the visitors a daunting target of 283. The tea from Saskia deserves a special mention (absolutely first class) as does the attempted reverse sweep from D'Ardenne which ended up with him in a crumpled heap much to the amusement of all in attendance. After stuffing their faces, Cookham ambled out onto the field, Jake looking particularly slow after downing 3 scones and 6 brownies. Puffy eyed skipper Gregory "Abe Lincoln" Davis was determined to get his hands on his first trophy since winning the under 9 egg and spoon race at Holy Trinity and employed the kind of ruthless strategy not seen since the German invasion of Poland. Fraser "boots" Finlan and Matt Dilley opened the bowling (the latter being particularly fired up after being cruelly run out) and after a solid start wickets started to fall with Ward, Parsons and Baillie all getting in but failing to go on to glory. Gullam (who looked like he had been cryogenically fozen in 1972) came to the crease and his 61 not out was the highlight of the Odney innings. He was backed up by the dangerous John (27) and an obstinate Laurence Garber who was given a fitting send off by Taylor when finally caught behind, fair play to him though he was a great sport. Odney never really threatened and the final wicket was taken when Andy Finlan (who rocked up for a bat looking like an American tourist) was caught by his son off the bowling of Nye and secured the trophy for Cookham with a 90 run victory. D'Ardenne was annoyingly the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets and his huge nose was twitching with delight as was his penis in the showers. Skipper Greg was belligerent in the post match press conference " Got the fackin job done, didn't I?" was all he had to say. There was a good speech from Gerry Charles at the end of the day and the Davis family, Mettler, jake and Tayls took the trophy to the Marlow Harvester to celebrate..............Taylor was in a particular buoyant mood after point blank refusing to try for a second run to get D'Ardenne to 50.........."it was his 50 or me possibly not securing a not out".......NO CONTEST. Good Times.
