Match report Hi All

Just a quick note note on the game we had with Datchet on Tuesday night. Unfortunately we are still waiting for Datchet to send over a copy of the scorebook (we will keep chasing), so apologises in advance if I don't get all the information quite right.

We had a bit of a challenge finding the ground as the club web site details, sends you to an estate about 1 mile away! I have feedback that they are incorrect to the other team manager. Anyway this did play a part in the result as we were about 15 mins late starting.

Dan won the toss and elected to bowl.

Aaron (our new player who was extensively scouted during the Summer :-)), opened the bowling and took a wicket in his first over, with the opening batsman playing on. Toby bowled from the other end and these two kept the batsmen really quite with Mr Extras being the top scorer about the first 5/6 overs.

Dan rotated his bowlers, ensuring everybody got an over or so, and this worked well as we took wickets at regular intervals. With Aaron picking up another wicket, Frazer and Taine also picking up wickets. I think it was Taine who picked up the key wicket of their No 4 batsman who looked very useful and had reached 47 before getting out. Datchet were going along at a good rate of 6/7 an over but at about the 12th over Rohan came in to bowl his Off Spin. It was obvious to see that Rohan has ben practising over the Winter as Datchet's lower order batsman couldn't cope with his line/length and in particular the high bounce he was getting and much like his performance against Boyn Hill last year, Rohan picked up 5 wickets :-).

We managed to bowl out Datchet for 119 with an over to spare. A great bowling performance. At one stage it was looking like they were going to score 140+ so well to the boys for keeping calm under pressure and some good captaincy from Dan who was always encouraging the boys.

Considering this was our first game of the season and we have had virtually no nets due to the poor weather, Mark and I were pleasantly surprised by the boys performance. We looked good in the field taking a number of catches and it was great to see boys diving around on the boundary stopping 4s and turning them into 2s. Frazier did this twice in quick succession so saving 4 runs. This makes a massive difference in 20/20 games and I know fielding is something that Mark/Dave and the overseas Coach will focus on at training on a Thursday night.

Some of the boys looked a little rusty with their bowling and Extras were quite a big part of the total (about 40 at a guess!), but as mentioned, totally understandable due to the poor weather and little Net practise.

So we had to score 120 in 20 overs and my maths made that 6 an over :-).

Kieran and Taine went out to open the batting with the words "plenty of time" and "don't run each other out!" (they have history) ringing in their ears.

They played great!

In fairly tough conditions with it starting to get dark and some uneven bounce, the boys put on 71 (I think) in 10 overs. Taine hitting a couple of cracking 6s :-). The running between the wickets was really good (other than an early scare) and we picked up a lot of runned byes.

Kieran was out on 19, and Dan came in next. I had been saying to the boys (both sets) to keep the gaming moving along as it was getting dark and Dan settled straight into the game hitting a couple of 4s in the couple of overs he was at the crease.

Unfortunately ,it was starting to get dangerous with bad light and their wicketkeeper got hit in the head with a ball that he said he just didn't see, so for safety reasons we had to stop the game.

I think we were on about 87 with about 6 overs left when the game stopped with 8 wickets in hand, so in a very commanding position and we were in "Leicsteresque" ( I just had to get in a football reference) odds on territory to win the game.

I know the boys were disappointed not to win the game outright and felt bad for Taine as he was looking good for a 50 but safety has to be the number 1 consideration.

The most important part of the night was the actual performance, which was really good on all 3 aspects of the game and with a few more training sessions I'm sure the boys will get even better.

Hope to see as many as possible at training tonight and tomorrow night and if you haven't already please reply to Mark on availability for Monday night game against Slough. This will be a much tougher game.
