Marlow Park 2 v Cookham Dean Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
The glorious and magnificently-endowed 3rd X1 got their league season off to a winning start against Marlow Park 2nd XI on Saturday. Skipper Gay losing the toss with the opposition unsurprisingly choosing to bat in the baking sun with a flat deck on offer.
The Dean were immediately in business as Davis and Munn took the new ball and both struck early. This brought the hard-hitting Noray to the crease, and in rather absurd circumstances he bludgeoned the ball to all parts, while Cutting rattled through the rest of the middle order with his canny medium pace in-swingers at the other end. Shakil joined Noray and the pair proceeded to go about rebuilding the innings. Taylor provided the double breakthrough as he trapped Noray LBW for a rapid 43 before bowling Shakil for 26. It was remarked that in a break from tradition, Taylor (3-32) had managed to snare two crucial wickets instead of the usual succession of invalids, coffin-dodgers & children that he normally prays on! Cutting took the final wickets to finish with the excellent figures of 5-46 and restrict the opposition to 133 all out from only 24.1 overs.
It was fair to say the the Marlow Park score was under par. This was emphasised as in time-honoured fashion Gay & D'Ardenne strolled out to face the old ball. Gay was the more aggressive of the pair as they built an important opening partnership of 76 which all but settled the match. When Gay (42) was well held at mid off and Applegarth was stumped, Marlow Park may have felt that there was a way back into the game. However Lambden, resembling American boxer Butterbean on the pitch and the last turkey in the shop in the shower, quickly got into his stride and started finding the boundary with regularity. By the time the gritty D'Ardenne fell for a patiently compliled 41 the target was under 25 and the game won. Lambden and Wilson knocked off the remaining runs to secure a 7 wicket victory for the Dean.
The 3rd XI will return to action next Saturday at Odney against Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI, where James Taylor and stalwart Richie Barker will resume their rivalry!
