Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Wooburn Narkovians on Sat 19 Sep 2015 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
The Dean hosted Wooburn Narks in what was a largely unremarkable game at the home of cricket on Saturday.
Having won the toss on a classic sticky dog of a wicket, skipper Gay inserted the opposition much to the delight of James Taylor, who was undoubtedly eyeing some dirty end of season wickets from the outset! The spritely O'Donaghue & waddling Paul Taylor took the new ball and hit their straps early, Taylor trapping opener Dolan LBW, and O'Donoghue producing a good one to induce a fine nick from the dangerous Ben Barker. The first change bowlers then took up the mantle, Taylor bowling veteran Cooper with a nice nip-backer, and young Devereux claiming a caught and bowled off of J Dolan to add polish to a good spell from the next big thing to hit Cookham cricket. Opener N Martin was playing well at the other end and was joined by stalwart Richie Barker, who was in obstenate mood, having been aggressively trolled in the world of social media by James Taylor in the build up. In scenes which had all and sundry harking back to Donald vs Atherton at Edgebaston in 1998, the two battle-hardened veterans went at it hammer & tong, neither giving an inch. The game seemed to grind to a halt as the two old prize fighters slugged it out until the introduction of the lethal spin combination of Kumar (3-25) & D'Ardenne (3-14) put the skids under Narks. Kumar sneaking one of his flighty off breaks through the defences of the impressive N Martin as he was eventually dispatched for a well made 60, and D'Ardenne repeating the dose to claim the obdurate Barker in the next over. After this, the Narks tail simply fell away as Kumar trapped Wheeler LBW for 8, then had Lamming well held by D'Ardenne running in from long-off. D'Ardenne then shamelessly delighted in hoovering up the last wickets as Reagon snicked a drive to Gay in the gully & Wilkinson was bowled around his legs, finally proving Gay's theory about D'Ardenne's leg side bowling correct! James Taylor was especially outraged at someone else hoovering up his rightfully deserved dirty wickets. Narks subsiding to 122 all out.
The Dean reply got off to a solid start as Mark Powell & Taine Richards started solidly. Ben Barker made the breakthrough, having Richards well held at slip, before Still removed Powell & Devereux in quick succession to leave the Dean reeling at 50-3. Against this backdrop, the hard-hitting Mettler & in form Jonny Gay combined to take the Dean to the brink, before Gay was somewhat unfortunate to be adjudged LBW. After a brief look of surprise, which momentarily threatened to still over in a 2007 style hissy fit, Gay trudged off. This bought Millar to the crease, and the Home Counties gun (at least until he is dropped to the 3's to resolve the wicket keeping crisis) was clearly not happy to be there. However, he was spared too much trauma as Lamming somehow contrived to concede 15 runs from the one legitimate delivery he bowled, Mettler (52*) tickling one away for 4 to bring up the winning runs and his half-century. Cookham easing home by 6 wickets with 20 overs to spare.
