Kidmore End v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI on Sun 19 Apr 2015 at 1.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
The Sunday 1st XI slumped to what was an ultimately comprehensive defeat to a strong Kidmore End side on Sunday. Having won the toss in overcast conditions with the pitch showing a worryingly green hue, skipper Jonny Gay decided to bat - mainly on principle as opposed to any tactical consideration. No doubt his decision was influenced by his desire to be spared the myopic negging of flat track bully Jake Richardson.
CDCC were under pressure immediately as opening bowlers Walker & Rogers bowled in good areas and found significant seam movement. The breakthough came in the 9th over when Dave Brooks, frustrated by his inability to get the scoreboard moving, drove injudiciously at Walker and was cleaned-up. The introduction of Frost in combination with the spin of Ashby bought further misery as Frost (3-38) cleaned up Richardson & Davis in quick succession to rip the heart out of the CDCC top order. Davis unfortunate as a careful defensive shot hit his boot and rolled back onto his stumps. When the still inebriated Brar misjudged to be bowled by Ashby for a dogged 17 things went from bad to worse as the middle order simply disintegrated against some probing bowling. Shyam Malshet seemed to be playing a different game of cricket to everyone else, scoring fluently and playing some powerful shots, as with support from the initially obdurate Gay he set about the Kidmore bowlers. Unfortunately CDCC's very own run out specialist- chose this time to sell Malshet down the river for a rapidly made 30 and leave the Dean on the brink at 81-8. D'Ardenne joined Gay at the crease and the two scored fluently against the generous part time bowling of Patey & Lawson, with Gay in particular taking a liking to the spin of Stevens when it was introduced. Gay was all aggression as he struck the slower bowlers through the long on region like an incandescent troglodyte; D'Ardenne scoring most of his boundaries with a combination of clips off his legs & punched cover drives. The return of the opening bowling combination slowed the rate as the scoring options were narrowed, and the introduction of ul-Wahab (2-4) bought the innings to a conclusion as D'Ardenne (36) lost his off peg to a good nip-backer while essaying an ambitious lofted drive and Gay skied to mid-wicket for a well made 28. The Dean stumbling to a depressingly inadequate 161 all out in the penultimate over.
The Kidmore End innings got off to a flying start as opening batsmen Harvey & ul-Wahab got off to a flying start against the absolute pie-fest served up by Greg 'Frodo' Davis and Gerry Spencer. There was some light relief for CDCC as Ritesh Mohanty took a sharp stumping off Spencer to dismiss ul-Wahab. The introduction of D'Ardenne's spin alongside the seam of Arun 'Chutney Ferret' Brar improved the situation rapidly for the Dean as the run rate slowed and Harvey (38) looking to maintain momentum, was trapped LBW by D'Ardenne attempting to sweep. With Andrew Pett introduced from the other end, CDCC's powerhouse (and neglected) 3rd XI spin combination turned the screws on the Kidmore innings. The left handed Bodekar has played fluently for his 41 but struggled with D'Ardenne's probing line outside off stump and eventually nicked through to keeper Mohanty who took his second sharp chance of the innings. On a track offering both turn and bounce to the spinners, new batsmen found it hard to start with Stevens & Ashby both being briefly worked over before D'Ardenne (4-24) bowled them both cheaply. Pte claimed the wicket of Lawson for 11 but the Dean eventually ran out of runs to defend as Roaster & Dutch guided Kidmore End home by 4 wickets with 12 overs to spare.
