Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI v Wokingham on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Cookham Dean suffered a heart-breaking seven run defeat on Saturday, as Australian quick bowler Matthew Wicks (5-44) returned to the attack to deny what looked like being a brilliant match-winning eighth wicket partnership between brothers Sim and Kurran Mangat.

The day had started well for the Dean, as Godwill Mamhiyo (2-67) bowled opener Jake Turner for 0 in the first over. However, Simon Myles and Wokingham’s second Australian Eamonn Vines, combined for a 50 run second wicket partnership, before Mamhiyo again struck, this time to remove Vines, for 22.

Myles moved past 50 without too many difficulties, and in combination with Jack Fisher (54) was looking dangerous, before Sim Mangat claimed the key wicket with Myles departing for a well-made 58. That instigated somewhat of a collapse, as 110-2 became 170-8 before some later order hitting from Wicks saw Wokingham to a total of 199 before being bowled out one over short of their full allocation. Young spinners Mangat with 3-38 and Patrick Castleden (4-56) were the pick of the bowlers for Cookham.

Cookham’s chase began badly as Yasir Quereshi was dismissed first ball by the off-spin of Paul Dewick (4-91), who was clearly relishing the chance to open the bowling on a track that was offering exaggerated turn. Ben Millar and Castleden did take the score to 27-1, before a tight spell of bowling saw the runs dry up and eventually the pressure told as four wickets, including that of overseas player Mamhiyo, fell for just nine runs to leave Cookham reeling at 36-5. It seemed a matter of time before Wokingham wrapped up the game, but Greg Davis and MAnish Chaudhary both counter-attacked with quick-fire scores of 33 and 29, respectively. The end once again appeared near when Chaudhary fell to Myles to leave the score 105-7, but that brought Sim Mangat to the crease to join brother Kurran. Kurran had so far played watchfully, but the pair both soon began to open up and play their shots. 82 runs later, Cookham appeared to be coasting to victory, before the return of Wicks brought a false shot from Sim. When Wasim Ahmed left his first ball which clattered into off-stump, there was no coming back for Cookham and Sajid Musthaq was hit in front of his stumps without scoring by Dewick, and Wokingham had their 25 points.

It was once again a great team effort from the Dean, who demonstrated the length of their batting line-up. Sitting in third at the midway point of the season has surpassed expectations, and the team will be looking to kick on away at new top of the table side Falkland, on Saturday.
