Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Egham Roses on Sun 21 Sep 2014 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 55 runs
Match report
The Sunday 1st XI cruised to what was an ultimately comfortable victory over Egham Roses on a bracing Sunday afternoon at Ricketts Field. On winning the toss the Egham skipper very generously inserted the Dean, much to the delight of flat track bully Jake Richardson. However, the innings got off to the worst possible start as Gay somehow contrived to gently ladle a return catch to bowler Fenwick when he'd actually middled the ball. This bought Jake Richardson to the crease, and he and Ben Millar looked to respond positively to this early setback. The introduction of Dix bought the breakthrough as Millar, seeing an inside edge rolling slowly towards his stumps panicked; in his attempts to swat the ball away he hit himself on the head with his bat, kicked the ball on to his stumps and fell unconscious to the floor. After a groggy Millar was helped off the pitch, he was soon followed by Jake Richardson who was cleaned up in more conventional fashion by a good nip-backer from Palmer. This bought the latest member of the Richardson clan to "grace" Rickets Field to the crease, and he alongside Paddy Castleden looked to rebuild the innings. The two combined to such effect that by the time Sam Richardson was bowled by Paul for a determined 35 the score had risen to 184 and the partnership was worth 128. D'Ardenne joined Castleden, and the two combined to ensure that the viewing public were spared the trauma of watching James Taylor going about his business with the bat in typically uncoordinated fashion. By the close the Dean had accelerated to an imposing 266-4 from their 40 overs with Castleden completed a chanceless and well-paced knock of 145 not out. The blonde bombshell rounding off an excellent season with the bat in his final innings of the summer.
After a tea in which the Cuttings nailed the scones and made mockery of some unflattering remarks from James Taylor, who complained bitterly about the failure to purchase ingredients from Waitrose or M&S, the Egham reply got underway. Openers Dix & Richardson batted well and scored quickly against the new ball, Issac Richardson tending to bowl legside and Garber lacking the pace to allow any margin for error on a flat deck. The introduction of D'Ardenne & Taylor bought control as D'Ardenne produced a good delivery to beat & bowl the impressive Dix, and Taylor immediately following on his coat tails to have Brad caught by Issac Richardson. D'Ardenne then begun to work his way through the Egham top order, and although the run rate remained good wickets fell regularly enough for the Dean to stay ahead in the game. Opener Richardson (41) skied to his namesake Issac, who held on following a juggling act to give D'Ardenne his second wicket. The frustrating Lenny was then bowled for 20, and when Morley & Paul fell in the same fashion Cookham's dirtiest spinner (5-30) had yet another horrible 5 for!! Millar took this opportunity to express his contempt for end of season friendly cricket, although judging by his performances over the last two weekends he seems to have found his level. James Taylor took this opportunity to raise morale with a dreadful attempt at a regulation catch, the pot-bellied jack rabbit clutching hoplessly; bowler Gay being the one not to see the funny side! Fenwick was run out at the second attempt by Cairns , who was at his inept best behind the stumps as always, to leave Egham on the brink. When the indulged Castleden was introduced to bowl Palmer in his first over for a well made 46 then bowl child Palmer for 4 the jig was up. The returning Taylor snaffled the last dirty child wicket to finish with 2-37 and end the game on a low ebb. Cookham winning by 55 runs.
