Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 1st XI v Hurst on Sun 15 Jun 2014 at 2pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
On a typical Stringer produced bowlers graveyard, it was no surprise that the Hurst skipper elected to bat on winning the toss. This looked the right decision as the opening pair progressed solidly against the steady new ball bowling of Richardson and Taylor. Taylor being particularly disgruntled at having to take the new ball and bowl at proper batsmen. The introduction of the part time seam of Davis bought a rapid change of fortune as three wickets fell in quick succession. Richardson top and tailing an impressive spell with wickets at either end, which suggested that his troubles with "medicinal" drugs maybe over. The rest of the bowling was less impressive as Smith struck an accomplished 93, which combined solid defence with a selection of good attacking shots. He was ably supported by Kayses, who was eventually snared by veteran Mangat who chose a good time to reveal his gun 3rd XI bowling potential. D'Ardenne and Mangat combined well in the final over to restrict Hurst, who at one point were looking at a much bigger score. Of particular note was a 15 minute long Captain's tantrum from D'Ardenne, when immediately after a missed stumping, three fielders combined in an orgy of prize-winning buffoonery, to somehow turn a dab into the legside into three runs.
Cookham were confident of competing well chasing, and this appeared to be justified as openers Millar (53) and Richardson (50) came flying out of the blocks. However, both fell in quick succession to ambitious shots, resulting in a mini collapse which saw Cookham fall to 117-4 as the spin of Higgs and Smith begun to bite. The arrival of Davis at the crease set the Cookham innings back on track as he immediately started wrestling the initiative back with some sensible selective hitting. The diminutive Nandury (20) provided a perfect foil with an accomplished 20, which lead his team mates to conclude that he and his batting bore a number of similarities to Sachin Tendulker!! In the latter over Cookham became a little bogged down as Gay came and went and Davis seemed to go slightly into his shell, as the required run rate began to rise. The heroic arrival of D'Ardenne (23*) got things moving as he initially ran hard then started finding his range. This seemed to re-invigorate Davis (60*) and the pair saw Cookham home with five balls and four wickets to spare. Of particular note was Taylor's decision to storm away from the ground in disgust (J.Deverill in tow) at only bowling seven of his allotted 8 overs and being made to bat 9. As he flounced away he was heard to mutter "I'm a f**king gun bat, and I've got a load of goats batting ahead of me; I scored 3 hundreds for Pinkneys Green, and I definitely haven't got Brian Lara Cricket '98 and reality mixed-up again!!". Rumours abound that he will be appearing for Pinkneys Green on a green top in Chiltons League division 4 next weekend.
