Match report Cookham Dean 3rd XI made a winning start to their league campaign against newcomers Gerrards Cross 3s. After a slightly delayed start thanks to a lack of stumps at the ground, Cookham batted first having won the toss. Skipper Jonathan Gay and Mark Kirton initially found it hard going against the accurate bowling of youngster Walsh and stalwart Warren, with Gay surviving a number of dropped catches behind the wicket. Just as they began to bat more freely and move towards a 50 partnership, Kirton edged to first slip and a catch was finally held. This brought Mike Cutting to the wicket and he combined well with his captain to set up an imposing total. They shared a partnership of nearly 150 and both passed previous best scores. Gay eventually was well caught at square leg for 82 but Cutting went on to complete a first ever century of the penultimate ball. This was not without some confusion however as a mis-calculation by the scorer had initially suggested he was on 98 with one ball remaining in the innings. Deciding to go for a big slog to bring up the ton, he was bowled and fell crestfallen to the ground. As the bowler had been running in though, a quick re-count had been done to confirm he had in fact made 100. Cookham finished on 224 for 3 from their 47 overs.

Gerrards Cross got their run chase off to a breezy start with Bob Bracey (29) and Westaway finding the boundary with eaze as they raced to 70 within 11 overs. A cracking delivery from Paul Taylor clipped Bracey's off-stump to end his innings and from there the visitor's response was fully reliant on Westaway. He played aggressively, particularly well through the mid wicket region, to raise hopes of a victory for his side. He was involved in a couple of run outs however and wickets started to fall at regular intervals. Going into the final overs, all three results were still possible but Westaway's departure for 91, bowled by Magesh Dev's off-spin swung the game back in Cookham's favour and the last wickets fell in quick succession as Cookham claimed victory with 1.2 overs remaining.
